When Contempt is Contagious
Less than 24 hours after my post about Harriet Miers’ and in essence George Bush’s contempt for Congress and the American people the House Judiciary Subcommittee Chairwoman, Rep Linda Sanchez agreed that Rep. Mel Watts’ remarks in which he stated that this "... the President was a liar" were indeed unparlimentarian and thus truth was taken down because Rep. Sanchez feared the threat made by Rep Cannon to take it to a House vote.
Since when is the truth “unparliamenatarian”? George Bush did lie about the WMD in Iraq. George Bush did lie about Iraq’s quest for nuclear weapons. George Bush die lie about al-Qaeda’s connection to Iraq and George Bush die lie about Iraq’s imminent threat to our national security. The unavoidable conclusion is that George Bush is a liar. American men and women were put in harms way because of these lies. Over 3,500 American men and women have died and ten times more returned injured forever because of the lies this President told when selling his war on Iraq.
This isn’t a personal attack. This is a truth that Rep Watt had the courage to speak and this is a truth that Rep. Cannon could not handle and it is the same truth that Rep. Sanchez feared being brought before a House vote. All the death and destruction caused by this President’s lies and yet Rep. Cannon is outraged about decorum being violated when someone dares to speak the truth that this President is in fact a liar. It is no wonder that Congress’ approval ratings are below that of the Presidents.
George Bush had contempt for Congress by claiming executive privlege which permitted Harriet Miers to show her contempt for Congress by not appearing before the House Judiciary Subcommittee which subpoened her. Rep. Chris Cannon had contempt for the truth when he demanded Rep Mel Watts statement be taken down from the record and Rep Linda Sanchez had contempt for the American people by fearing a threat from someone who couldn't handle the truth.
The American people have contempt for theirs representatives who have the constitutional right and responsibility which they failed to use to check the excess of power by the executive branch and hold it accountable for exercising executive privilege in a blatant attempt to conceal its abuses of that power.
The decision to yield to decorum ignored the truth that shall set us free from this vicious cycle of contempt that divides this nation and that truth is the truth that this President lied about the reasons for war with Iraq, as such this President can accurately be described as a liar and any claims of executive privilege made by a liar should not be accorded any entitlement of presumption rather it should raise the highest levels of suspicion.
