The Real Tragedy of 9/11

Seven years later the country commemorates the tragedy of 9/11. The odds that the Republican Party will tell the country that we haven’t been attacked since then because of George W. Bush’s policies outweigh the odds that anyone in the media will remind the public that the continental United States weren’t attacked before 9/11 since the War of 1812. Our educational system is so abysmal that most Americans don’t even know our own history and we are thus easy prey for such misinformation leading us to erroneously conclude that the Republican have a point. Indeed at times we seem to revel in our collective ignorance.

The fact of the matter is that the Bush Administration preferred to be on vacation rather than preparing to respond to an imminent attack by terrorists. That no one has been held accountable for such criminal neglect is unfathomable. Sadly, the historical record shows that the only person who lost his/her job because of 9/11 was Bill Maher when he made comments on his ABC show Politically Incorrect that the terrorists who brought down the towers were not cowards. Those who were asleep at the helm remained in power for another seven years guiding the ship of state to the edge overlooking the abyss.

Ever since 9/11 rabid patriots from both major political parties and a press that has long since abdicated it’s role of watch dog in favor of being a mouth piece for those in power have been the true cowards by wrapping themselves in the flag proud of their own ignorance about how 9/11 occurred and why 9/11 occurred in order to prevent future terrorist attacks from taking place in a country that consistently fails to grasp the truism “those who cannot remember history are condemned to repeat it”. Indeed when John McCain’s convention showed a video tribute falsely linking Iran to 9/11 it became obvious that a McCain administration would condemn this country to more of the same.

So while the rest of the country gets all sentimental about the tragedy of 9/11 and their chests swell with phony patriotic pride some of us will remain stunned by the fact that nearly three thousand innocent people died yet no one accepted responsibility except for Richard Clarke who was actually belittled for doing so and no one was held accountable for such ineptitude by the Bush Administration who ten months earlier made a mockery of democracy in order to rule on such a grand scale of cronyism and incompetence is in essence the greatest tragedy of 9/11 that all but a few will remember.
