May Day
More of life’s little absurdities as April becomes May Day – international worker’s day – associated with communism – that political relationship which ultimately leads to the withering away of the state. based on the simple observation that there are more worker’s in this world than there are owners creating a strong suspicion that the state creates a class of unemployed workers to divide people, to keep people from realizing what they have in common.
May Day is celebrated with exuberance in many countries most notably Italy which permits most political parties to participate – including the communist party. That’s right – a political party which represents the interests of the majority operating in a country where the Vatican preaches opposition to war but does nothing to stop it.
Yet when John Kerry was running for president, the future pope was issuing edicts to deny him, and by implication all others who believed in choice. Without choice there is no liberty. Without choice one no longer has the right to live one’s life. Without choice one pursues a happiness defined by someone or some other group. Why didn’t the church do something more to stop the unjust and immoral war in Iraq?
And it’s the same Vatican which is also opposed to the political ideology of communism. Organized religion formed a symbiotic relationship with the state – it now owes it’s legitimacy to the state thus it would not be in their best interests for the worker’s of the world to unite and dismantle those structures forced upon them by church and state by whatever means necessary.
In this country May Day will be celebrated only by a few and the press won’t cover any of it for the fourth estate, so essential to the existence of democracy, has no become the official information organ of the state by ignoring the other side of the story – the side that knows through personal experience that this is certainly not a pro worker country as evidenced by a history of violence (don’t take my word - read Jeremy Breecher’s “Strike” – know it for yourself) by the state against the worker and a constant barrage of bile against unions. Hell even the malls don’t have May Day sales – what better proof to attest to success of corporate media’s role in manipulating opinion.
Many of my countrymen who do know about May Day usually associate it with communism and they usually associate communism with either Stalin or godless or both. To be sure Stalin had no regard for human life and Marx did say “religion is the opiate of the masses” but most people have no knowledge of communism as a political ideology which professes economic, social, and political justice – globally speaking.
The reality is that both the church and state are decadent institutions that have become corrupted by greed and power. Today’s church and by that I mean the organized Christian is sexist and homophobic and as such it is anti-Christian – when Christ said “love thy neighbor” he didn’t mention any groups that were excluded. Today’s church is divisive when it keeps people – workers - against each other.
And today’s state, the true axis of evil – government/business/religion, perpetuates rather than prevents the oppression against others with or without the consent of the governed by dividing the people, workers, against one another – globally speaking.
I am neither a communist, an anarchist, a Stalinist, a Leninist, nor a Marxist. I am just a worker who wants what most other workers want e.g. a sufficient amount of the proper food to live a healthy life, the proper health care should I become ill, a place in which to live in comfort, an equal opportunity to pursue an education which will permit me to live a life in such a way that will make this a better place for all forms of life that follow.
In essence I merely want to exercise my inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness as I choose to define and exercise them without causing harm to the life or property of others. I am just a worker who does not deny the existence of the furthest star merely because I cannot see with my eyes that which I feel in my heart and soul for economic, social, and political justice – here at home and abroad.
Today is May Day. A day where I can say “workers of the world unite” and suggest we celebrate May Day in this country by taking the first step to prepare a petition based on the commons interests of the workers in this country which can be presented our state governments calling for constitutional conventions to be conducted nationwide for the purpose of replacing all those elected officials who represent special interests and not worker’s interests in order to create a government which will better provide for economic, social, and political justice for all and not just the privileged few.
